Clintwood-Haysi thoughts

I am a seasoned fan of Clintwood and congrats to the Haysi team for a game well played....but what did my heart more good than anything, was seeing my grandson and his friends from Clintwood having a friendly conversation after the game. Folks, that is all it about for us! We all need to take lessons.

The Clintwood coaching staff have always done a great job of instilling sportsmanship in their players, moreso than many other teams in the area.

Ideally, it would be great if that sportsmanship would extend to the communities.

Congratulations to the Haysi Tigers on a well-deserved win!

On your sideline? The play happened on about the 3 yard line near the endzone at the field house on the right hash mark. I was standing right next to Clintwood fan Tony Mullins and his wife and our vantage point was right behind the head ref about 13 yards from the play. It was the best view I had of any play the entire night. The ref made an extremely late call and did not blow his whistle and signal incomplete until the ball had already rolled around and was recovered by a Haysi defensive lineman. I immediately said fumble and Tony just smiled and didn't disagree. I think the call was based on the score at the time. Oh well no big deal...like I said before it didn't affect the final outcome.

Lots of bad calls (going against both teams)

Haysi Came out excited and exploded on Clintwood in the 1st qtr (99% sure that we were in negative yardage that 1st qtr and Haysi started all 3 of there drives on the Clintwood side of the field)

Clintwood started the game out looking like they were a bunch of Freshman and sofmores going against a super tough team in a hostel environment IMHO in the final 3 qtrs Clintwood held there own (Being fair Haysi looked to be the better team the whole way through even after blowing there load in the 1st)

The kids from Clintwood grew up alot this week and so long as they don't tuck there tail between there legs this game will make them a better team this year.

I honestly thought Haysi would take a step back this season but I think that so long as something funky does not happen at Honaker they will finish up the year 10-0 and the Region D will go through Sandlick (Offence is better than last season the D may not be as tough but I kind of hope maby our O is alittle better this year as well [img]/LDPforum/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img] )

Haysi has a heck of a team this season and I hope we get to see them again at the end of the season so I can see how much our younguns grow up during the year

Yes closer to our sideline, You were standing near Tony and Valerie I know exactly where they were. I however was even closer to that. I always try to get behind the offense so I can see the number of who takes the ball on a carry, see if there is a bobbled exchange, etc. That is why when you're behind the QB and you see the arm going forward and the ball coming out, you're a bit more sure of the motion.

You said fumble immediately and Tony smiled. Mmmm what exactly was he supposed to do, jump up and down and beat you to death with your own arm?? You all were winning handily, it wasn't like we were disgusted that a bad call was going to cost us the game at this point. Probably was smiling that you were up like that and you were still trying for calls. The ref didn't call it immediately but when he did, he was awful emphatic wasn't he? It was a close call, no question, it may have been a fumble but to me at least, it really looked like he was trying to go forward as it slipped out and like it or not, that would be an incomplete pass, not a fumble. It wasn't like he was standing there holding onto the ball and it just fell out of his hands. I'll agree with you that at least one of the early non-fumbles was a fumble, I'm just not agreeing with every call that you see. You're right though, it didn't matter in the outcome.

Man did we destroy you all or what! That was one of the best games I ever seen and then to come on here and read a player for Clintwood crying about it!

Now that I have had a few laughs about it, it really was a good game for us. We came out and took you out of the game immediately. Obviously Grundy had nothing because neither your offensive line nor your defensive lines could do a thing. No protection for 8, and no pressure on Compton equals a big win for us. I think your defensive coordinator is trying to do too much, he was jumping around like a lunatic over there trying to make adjustments and the moment you guys would try to adjust we would run a play, it was perfect. That kind of junk worked when you had a Moore in there who knew what to do and could do it quick, but with a bunch of young guys like you all have, keep it simple stupid. Worry about tackling and people just doing the simple stuff before you try to open the playbook on them.

Good luck Clintwood. I hope you all win a bunch of other games now. I'm proud of my Tigers. I said we didn't need to win this game but just worry about Honaker but I'm glad we won this one. I didn't yell and scream at the ref or jump up and down or anything...i simply said "fumble" in a normal tone of voice. To me the call wasn't close...he clearly lost it as he was pulling it back to throw and the slapped it forward after he had already lost it. I believe i could see the replay 100 times and still be sure it was a fumble. I guess you see things through green glasses and I see them through red, i don't know.

Counts is right because some calls went against Clintwood as well. One of Haysi's recievers appeared to juggle the ball before gaining possession on the sidelines and it was ruled a completed pass. On Clintwood's first touchdown there appeared to be a blatant facemask on Osborne as he crossed the goaline after being caught from behind by Barton.

I don't agree with your rub it in attitude but you are making a valid point about Clintwood's defensive strategy. It appears to me they are trying to do too much. Alot of the short pass plays that Haysi was running were very simple routes and plays that you run in JV but guys were coming WIDE OPEN without a defender 10 yards from them. At some point with H.S. kids you have to simplify things and say this is what your assignment is, this is what we are running. Don't adjust to everything the offense does...make the offense adjust to you.

Funky things have happened at Honaker before just like in '04 when Haysi took a more talented team over there and got beat. We'll see what happens but I think if we go over there and play well then everything will be alright.

Just like I told you before the game I think the offense is going to be fine for Haysi. I didn't leave the game that night feeling great about the defense but I think they will be ok. I said before I believe the significant step back for the Haysi program won't come until the '09 season(Colley will step down that year). They will be down for several years until some of the kids that are in little league right now get in H.S. The JV program at Haysi right now is not in good shape.

I believe Clintwood can take alot of positives from that game and I think they will be a strong contender in the LPD. I don't think last years win against PV was a fluke, I believe they can beat them again. I feel almost certain they won't go 0-3 against Burton, GC and PV. I believe they will get an easy win against Appy next week. I too hope they win the rest of their regular season games and would love to see an all Dickenson County Region D Championship. Can you imagine if DC high was consolidated this year with the improvement at Ervinton? Put a few of the athletes they have in there with the speed Clintwood has and the size and power at Haysi and I'm afraid Richlands would just have to settle with being the 2nd best team in SWVA. Ofcourse that holds true over the past 15 or 20 years...football is as good in Dickenson County as anywhere per capita.

I think I would have worded that a little bit differently but those are some valid points. No denying it.
